What’s New with WNBA Members?

WNBA members can submit their news at any time, and then the Bookwoman staff shares members’ news in the Bookwoman Newsletter and on the Bookwoman Blog. Below, you’ll find the WNBA Members’ News for May 2022.


Member Appearances

Lucille Lang Day (WNBA-SF) appeared at AWP 2022 on the panel “Poetry & Place: Connecting Who We Are to Where We Are.”

Caitlin Hamilton Summie (WNBA-Nashville) appeared at AWP 2022 on the panel “All About Publicity: Publicists and Small Presses.”

Megha Sood (WNBA-Network) appeared at AWP 2022 on the panel “Creative Activism in Words and Actions: Writers & Activists at the United Nations.”

Tamara Davis (WNBA-Network) appeared at BookFest for an author chat. You can see her at the 42 minute mark. She is also excited to announce that Despite the Buzz won first place for contemporary romantic fiction and third place for literary fiction at The BookFest! 

Constance Adler (WNBA-New Orleans) was part of a panel discussion on May 16 at Blue Cypress Books. She discussed her work and her experience of writing as a woman in New Orleans.

Sarah Archer (WNBA-Charlotte) will be teaching a class on character development for the Phoenix Screenwriters Association on May 21. The focus is on screenwriting, but the information provided should be applicable to fiction writers as well. It’s a hybrid event, so students can attend in person or online. Cheryl Fish (WNBA-NYC) is pleased to invite you to a book talk and reading sponsored by her recent poetry publisher, Shanti Arts. Three poets from the press will showcase the influence of the natural world, the ecstasy of discovery, the cultures of Finland and Ireland, grief in the modern world and other topics addressed in their work. It will be on Zoom on Sunday, May 22 at 5:30 p.m EDT. Email publisher@shantiarts.com to rsvp and receive the Zoom link a day or two in advance.

New Positions

Laurel Stokes (WNBA-NYC) started a new position as Backlist Director at Hachette Book Group.

Writing and Publishing Announcements

Antoinette Carone’s (WNBA-NYC) debut book, Hotel of the Siren, was published by Scantic Books. In the late twentieth-century, before cell phones and the internet, Lucy comes home from work and finds her artist husband Jon slumped over his easel. Some days later, Jon dies. At his funeral, Lucy watches a lady in a green scarf linger by his grave. When Lucy later finds the green scarf carefully placed over Jon’s grave, she begins to suspect Jon may have been having an affair. Lucy moves to Naples, Italy. There, she changes her name to Lucia, meets new friends, enjoys running along the bay, and begins a love affair of her own with Antonio. Hotel of the Siren tells of lovers and a city where reality can differ from appearance and expectations can be overturned.

Malika J. Stevely’s (WNBA-Charlotte) debut historical novel, Song of Redemption, was published January 22, 2022. The book is saga set in a French and English-speaking parish and is receiving fantastic reviews. Inspired by true events, Song of Redemption tells the story of Danielle, an enslaved songstress whose body was discovered in a wall of the Louisiana mansion in which she worked, setting off a media frenzy. When her last living relative returns to the plantation home to identify Danielle’s body, she reveals to local newspaper reporters, details surrounding Danielle’s fate.

Kitty Zeldis’s (WNBA-NYC) book, The Dressmakers of Prospect Heights, will be published by HarperCollins on December 6, 2022. You can pre-order it today.

Joan Steinau Lester (WNBA-SF) is celebrating her second Finalist Award for her new memoir, Loving Before Loving: A Marriage in Black and White. The first finalist award was for the Story Circle Sarton Award; this one is for the Foreword Indies Award.

Nicole C. Ayers (WNBA-Charlotte) delivered a powerful message at the inaugural TEDx Crawford Road Event with her talk “Create a Legacy of Body Acceptance.”

Harikleia Sirmans (WNBA-Network) published these stories in The Medium:
