Tell us about yourself.
My name is Catherine Jardines. I’m the president of the Charlotte chapter of the WNBA.
By day, I am a program manager for a financial institution. In the evening, I enjoy hanging out with my husband, dog, and the ladies of the WNBA. I’ve been a member for the past three years and the president over the past year.
Why did you join WNBA?
When I moved to Charlotte a few years ago, a family friend was a member and mentioned the chapter had a great book club. I wanted to be social and to meet people. So, I started coming to the book club and then to events.
I found the women to be warm, fun, and brilliant. It was so different from what I do on a day-to-day basis. It was wonderfully refreshing. I suggest others join because the camaraderie, the exposure to diverse people, and the opportunity to network comes in all shapes and sizes.
What value does the promotion of books bring to your community?
The promotion of books in my community, and I hope in all, has incredible value. It provides exposure to different voices and perspectives. The promotion of books themselves provides the opportunity for community. One can connect to a book physically, such as reading to your child or another or discussing with friends, or virtually, within the world of the book itself.
What book has had a lasting impact on you?
This book, about Paul Farmer who founded Partners in Health, was incredibly moving and inspiring. It changed my perspective and outlook on many aspects of my life and shaped the person I continue to aspire to be.
