WNBA Members’ Noteworthy News: May 2019

 
 
The Women’s National Book Association’s (WNBA) talented membership do so much to promote literacy in our communities. Each month, we are happy to share our WNBA Members’ Noteworthy News. 
 

Boston

Jodi Daynard’s book, A Transcontinental Affair, will be published in the fall by Lake Union Publishing.

A Transcontinental Affair, is being called “A sweeping tale of adventure and danger, innovation and corruption.”

 


Charlotte

Kathleen Burkinshaw (The Last Cherry Blossom) and Linda Vigen Phillips (Behind These Hands: A Novel in Verse), will speak on a Young Adult Books Panel with Lisa Williams Kline on May 25, 2019, at Park Road Books.
 
 

 
Carla A. Carlisle, author, speaker, and child and mental health advocate, will moderate “Children First, Ending Generational Trauma” on May 16, 2019, at Sage Restaurant, Charlotte, NC. 
 
This panel and dinner event is in recognition of National Mental Health, Foster Care, and Trauma Awareness Month. It is sponsored by the Alexander Network, NC Courts, and the Justice Initiative.
 

 
Rachel Feldman, VP and Membership Chair for WNBA-Charlotte, has joined the board of the Friends of the Library at Queen’s University. This organization is dedicated to providing social and literary events to the Queens campus and the Charlotte community through book and author events, social and cultural gatherings, and book clubs and fundraising.
 

 
 
 
Nancy Werking Poling’s new novel, While Earth Still Speaks, will be available June 15, 2019, from Screech Owl Press.
 
 
 

Nashville

Caitlin Hamilton Summie’s short story collection, To Lay to Rest Our Ghosts, received the 2019 Phillip H. McMath Book Award.

 

 


New York

Diana Altman will launch her novel We Never Told on June 13, 2019, at Shakespeare & Co.

Eileen Donovan’s historical novel, Promises, is scheduled for release in July 2019.

Eileen has a reading scheduled on September 21, 2019, at Scuppernong Books in Greensboro, NC.

Eileen has a reading scheduled on October 5, 2019, at Claymont Library in New Castle, DE.

 


San Francisco 

Judy Bebelaar and Ron Cabral’s book, And Then They Were Gone, just won first prize, non-fiction, from Northern California Publishers and Authors 2019.

 


 

Angelica Carpenter had a successful book tour in Utah.  She spoke at Utah State University, was interviewed on Utah Public Radio, spoke for two book clubs, and was featured on the front page of the newspaper.

 


 

Mag Dimond’s travel memoir is on its way! It will be published by She Writes in September 2019.  Look for launch events in the fall.

 


 

Francine Falk-Allen, author of Not a Poster Child, has written a guest blog post, “Sticky Wicket Memoirs,” on challenges involved in writing difficult memoir material.

 

 


 

Award-winning memoirists Francine Falk-Allen, Susan Burrowes, and Vanya Erickson spoke on the “Writing the Hard Stuff” panel for the Bay Area Book Festival on May 4, 2019, at the Hotel Shattuck, Berkeley, CA.

Joan Frank moderates a Bay Area Book Festival panel called QUEST: Journeys through Generations on  May 4, 2019, at Berkeley at 10:00 a.m. 

 


 

Joan Gelfand gave a talk in April based on her book, You Can Be a Winning Writer: The 4 C’s of Successful Authors, at the Creative Light Factory (a writer’s co-working space) outside of Philadelphia. The talk was sponsored by WNBA-Greater Philadelphia.

Saeeda Hafiz, author of The Healing: One Woman’s Journey from Poverty to Inner Riches, wrote “This Black Girl’s Journey” featured in Common Ground Magazine.

She will be team-teaching a workshop – Better than Caffeine: Healthy Habits for High Energy Writing at the Mechanics Institute on May 31, 2019, at 12 p.m.

 


 

Brenda Knight, Editorial Director at Mango Publishing, announced that Mango was named #1 Fastest Growing Publisher in America by Publisher’s Weekly!

 


 

Jing Li’s short story was accepted by the California Writers Club 2019 Literary Review.  She also just completed her memoir The Red Sandals

 


 

Mary Mackey is featured in the May 2019 issue of Harper’s Magazine. There was a full page spread about her new collection of poetry, The Jaguars That Prowl Our Dreams.

She will be interviewed by Harper’s along with Sandy McIntosh, Marsh Hawk Press editor, on May 9, 2019, at Book Culture on Columbus in NYC at 7 p.m.

 


 

Fran Quittell’s book, The Central Park Lost Mitten Party, was endorsed by clinical psychologist and neuroscientist Rick Hanson for its positive message on mindful parenting.

 


 

Aline Soules’s short essay, “Forever Dali” was published by The Ekphrastic Review on March 26, 2019. 

 


 

Renate Stendhal was recently interviewed by Lambda Literary.

 


 

Michelle Travis’s children’s book, My Mom Has Two Jobs, won a 2019 Independent Publisher Book Award, earning a Bronze Medal for Best Children’s Picture Book (ages 7 and under).

She will also be doing a Storytime reading and book signing for the book at the Reading Bug on Mother’s Day: May 12, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. (785 Laurel Street, San Carlos, CA). 

 


Washington, D.C.

Naomi Milliner’s book Super Jake & the King of Chaos (Running Press Kids) comes out in May 2019. The middle grade contemporary novel features family and special needs and is loosely based on her own family.
