WNBA Members’ Noteworthy News: June 2019

The Women’s National Book Association’s (WNBA) talented membership do so much to promote literacy in our communities. Each month, we are happy to share our WNBA Members’ Noteworthy News.

Charlotte

Kathryn Schwille was a special guest speaker at The League of Women Voters on May 22, 2019, as part of their Speaker’s Series. Kathryn shared insights from her novel, What Luck, This Life. The novel explores the fallout of the Columbia Shuttle disaster on a small Texas town, beset by tensions of class, race and missed opportunity.

Judy Goldman will be a featured event speaker at The Art of Memoir: A Conversation between Judy Goldman and Tommy Tomlinson on June 8, 2019, at the Charlotte Library, Morrison Branch. Judy is the author of Together: Memoir of a Marriage and a Medical Mishap. Tommy Tomlinson is the author The Elephant in the Room: One Fat Man’s Quest to Get Smaller in a Growing America.

Sally Brewster, owner of Park Road Books, presented her curated list of 2019 Summer Reads to the WNBA-Charlotte Chapter on May 13th, 2019.

Nashville

Booksellers across the country chose Mary Laura Philpott’s book, I Miss You When I Blink: Essays (Atria) as the number-one pick for the April 2019 Indie Next List.

Mary Laura’s debut collection has also been named a Most Anticipated Book or Best Book of Spring 2019 by Esquire, BuzzFeed, Real Simple, Newsweek, ELLE Australia, The Chicago Review of Books, the Skimm, Southern Living, Garden & Gun, The Millions, Bustle, HelloGiggles, and Lit Hub.

New Orleans

Kathy Crighton will sign her novel The New Normal at the Metairie Barnes & Noble Saturday, June 1, 2019, at 3 p.m.

Tiana Nobile was featured as the Writer of the Week on Maudlin House. Tiana’s poem “Operation Babylift” was published by Kweli Journal on April 30, 2019.

Chapter treasurer, Karen Kersting, was awarded a scholarship to attend the 2019 Santa Barbara Writers Conference.

Linda Prout, a Little Free Library ambassador, is a winner of the first-ever Todd H. Bol Awards for Outstanding Achievement.

New York

Ellen Rittberg will premiere her play Sci-Fi at NY Summerfest on July 29, 2019.

San Francisco

WNBA-SF members Patti Breitman, Elise Marie Collins, and Saeeda Hafiz will host Productivity Hacks for Writers at the Mechanic’s Institute.

Kate Farrell signed a book contract with Mango Publishing, a how-to on the art of storytelling for adults: Story Power.

Joan Frank was accepted to Vermont Studio Center for a month’s writing residency this June!

Joan Gelfand will give a workshop on “You Can Be a Winning Writer: the 4 C’s of Successful Authors” at Books, Inc. Opera Plaza , San Francisco on Saturday June 22 11AM – 1pm

The Eric Hoffer Awards Committee has announced that Mary Mackey’s collection of poetry, The Jaguars That Prowl Our Dreams: New and Selected Poems 1974 to 2018 (Marsh Hawk Press) has won the 2019 Eric Hoffer Award for the Best Book Published by a Small Press.

The Hoffer Award highlights salient writing, as well as the independent spirit of small publishers. Since its inception, the Hoffer has become one of the most important international book awards for small, academic, and independent presses and a platform for and the champion of the independent voice.

Jeanne Powell is featured in the annual Petaluma Poetry Walk, September 2019, reading from TWO SEASONS, her latest poetry collection.

Fran Quittel attended BookExpo in NYC.

Also, clinical psychologist and neuroscientist Rick Hanson has included Fran’s book The Central Park Lost Mitten Party in his resource list for books on mindful parenting as Party shows mom as the creative force in transforming a child’s disappointment into a marvelous adventure!

Radio host and CreativeBook Concepts founder, M. Glenda Rosen (AKA Marcia Rosen), is also the author of the The Senior Sleuths mystery series, the Gourmet Gangster mystery series, and the Dying To Be Beautiful mystery series.

“Our mission is to inform, entertain, explore and promote an interest in all things related to mystery books. The Mystery Lovers Podcast, available on numerous hosting sites, brings conversations and guests of interest, insight, humor, even who dunnitwith mystery authors, publishers, book store owners, bloggers, conference attendees and fans of all types of mysteries…from books to movies”

Aline Soules was awarded first prize ($150) in The Fourth Annual Yule Love It Lavender Farm & Letters Poetry Contest for her poem “Ephemera.”

One of Vivien Zielin’s stories from “Eyeballing Big Croc: Chasing Dreams Around the World” and her book was featured in Inside Scoop the weekly digital magazine of Overseas Adventure Travel which goes out to travelers all over the US.

WNBA-SF’s 2019 Bay Area Writer’s Contest launches June 1st and runs through October 31st, 2019.

Genres include: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. Fiction and Nonfiction should be 500-2500 words. Poetry should be no more than 40 lines.

Fees are: WNBA members $14.00 per submission, non-members $20.00 per submission. Participants may submit up to 3 pieces but must pay a separate fee for each submission.

Unpublished work is preferred, though stand-alone excerpts from works seeking a publisher or agent are accepted. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but if you are published elsewhere, please notify WNBA-SF immediately.
