Women's National Book Association

Local Business Support National Award

On Tuesday, March 18th, the Women's National Book Association presented its prestigious WNBA Award to the author, Patricia McKissack. The Award is presented every two years to a living American woman who derives part or all of her income from books and allied arts, and who has done meritorious work in the world of books beyond duties or responsibilities of her profession or occupation. The award has been presented continuously since 1940. Past recipients include Patricia Schroeder, Former Congresswoman and President of American Publishers; First Lady Barbara Bush, literacy advocate; and Barbara Tuchman, author.

Publishers, distributors, associations and other organizations in the book industry provide support for WNBA's activities as sustaining members on a national level. Two of these supporters are Thomas Nelson, Inc. , and Ingram Book Company. These local businesses were part of the award presentation as they recognized Ms. McKissack's award Tuesday evening. Presenting gifts to Ms. McKissack were Laurie Whaley, Brand Manager of Thomas Nelson Bibles, and Mary Grey James, Senior Product Manager of Ingram Book Company.

The Women's National Book Association is a national organization of women and men who work with and value books. WNBA exists to promote reading and to support the role of women in the community of the book. The Nashville Chapter holds monthly meetings on the first Thursday of the month (excluding June, July and August) at Davis-Kidd Booksellers. Meetings are free and open to the public.

WNBA Announces Children's Bookseller Award Nominees

The Women's National Book Association is proud to announce the nominees for this year's Lucile Micheels Pannell Award. The Pannell Award was established twenty years ago to honor Ms. Pannell, a model bookwoman and children's bookseller. The Award recognizes retail booksellers who excel at creatively bringing books and children together and inspiring children's interest in books and reading. WNBA will present the Award to two bookstores (one general and one children's bookstore) at BookExpo America 2003 in Los Angeles. Each recipient will receive a check for $1000 and a framed piece of original art by a children's book illustrator.

This year six stores were nominated in the children's bookstore category and 11 stores were nominated in the general bookstore category. "This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the Pannell Award, and I couldn't be more impressed with the nominations we've received," says Eileen Hanning, WNBA's Pannell Committee Chair. "We should be very thankful for these quality children's booksellers. These bookstores are clearly committed to serving their young readers. The entire bookselling industry benefits from their extraordinary ability to create life-long readers as much as their communities do!"
